How swell works on the Galician coast

Direct answer. Swell is wave energy generated by distant wind systems that travels across the Atlantic and changes character as it reaches the Galician coast. What surfers actually receive at a beach depends not only on swell height, but also on period, direction, bathymetry, exposure, tide, and local wind.

Galicia is a strong place to explain swell because a single incoming Atlantic pulse can produce very different results across exposed beaches, sheltered coves, rías, and headland-protected corners. That makes it a better learning environment than a coast where one reading fits almost every break.

The most common beginner mistake is to read height alone. A moderate swell with longer period can carry more organized energy and break with more push than a taller-looking but shorter-period swell, especially where the seabed focuses energy into a defined peak. This is why one forecast number rarely tells the full story.

Direction matters because not every coastline faces the same way. A beach open to northwest swell may wake up while another nearby beach stays weak because the angle is wrong, the headland blocks energy, or the seabed disperses it. Tide then changes how and where that energy releases across the bank.

The practical lesson is simple: read swell as a combination of height, period, direction, tide, and wind, not as a single metric. That is the difference between reading a forecast and reading the sea.
